County board directs legislative team to draft letter backing tourism, opposes House bill on TDT

Commissioner Monica Flores urged action after recent developments in Tallahassee affecting tourism funding, saying she was “extremely concerned” and requested that staff and the county’s legislative team monitor and coordinate responses. Commissioner Sara Sachs moved that the legislative team prepare a draft letter for board review and the mayor’s signature; Commissioner Weiss offered a friendly amendment to incorporate explicit opposition to HB 1221 and that language was included in the direction to staff.
The clerk conducted a roll call. Commissioners Flores, Powell, Sachs, Weiss, Whitworth and Mayor Marino voted yes; Vice Mayor Baxter voted no. The clerk recorded the vote 6-1.
Why it matters: Commissioners said tourism is a major industry — a multi‑billion‑dollar economic sector in Palm Beach County — and that changes at the state level to tourist development taxes or related revenues could affect local services and beach nourishment programs. Board members asked the county’s legislative affairs staff to move quickly and consult with county partners and FAC (Florida Association of Counties) as appropriate.
The board directed staff to prepare the draft letter promptly for board review and signature.
