Tom Moore, assistant director of Traffic Engineering, reviewed the program and said the 2025 Safe Streets budget is about $1.1 million, with $490,000 dedicated for life‑cycle management of in‑street devices such as rapid‑rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs) and high‑visibility pavement markings. Moore said staff will update the city’s high‑injury network later this year and continue to cross‑reference Safe Streets candidates with larger reconstruction projects and other grants.
The approved slate includes intersection and crossing improvements (Regent Street/Lafayette; North Owen Drive at Lucia Crest Park; Wright Street at Straubel), additional RRFBs, protected bike‑lane work on Broom Street and Gilman Street, speed‑limit reductions in select corridors and several pedestrian‑safety island and bike detection projects. Moore said some projects are tied to other efforts such as the federally funded Safe Streets for All grant and that the full candidate list and scoring spreadsheet are posted on the Safe Streets web page.
A motion to approve the proposed projects passed by unanimous consent. Commissioners praised staff for transparent documentation and asked staff to consider focused stakeholder sessions for accessibility and to provide regular online updates of progress. Staff said they will publish monthly or quarterly updates to the program page and begin summer construction under an upcoming citywide contract.
