Stitt explains picks for OU and OSU regent seats, cites different selection rules for each school

Governor Kevin Stitt described his process for choosing members of the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University boards of regents, saying he seeks candidates with specific expertise and consults existing board members and university leaders.
‘‘With Oklahoma State University, the problems that needs to be fixed, quite frankly, is the restrictions on how I pick Board of Regents. OU has a much much better system. The Regents I pick at OU could be from anywhere in The United States,’’ Stitt said. He said OU appointees have included out-of-state business leaders and that brings specific expertise.
Stitt named recent appointees and the credentials he cited in explaining choices: he referenced Rainey Williams, an Oklahoma City attorney and business leader who served on an OU health board, Tracy Poole (Tulsa-area, OSU seat) and others, saying the selections aim to add financial and legal acumen to university governance. He said OSU regent seats sometimes require geographic or agricultural representation, which narrows the applicant pool.
Stitt said his office interviews candidates and consults current regents and sometimes university leadership before making appointments. He did not announce new statutory changes to regent-selection rules during the press conference.
