The speaker said there have been exchanges with the city’s Department of Public Works and utility providers and that some historic lighting replacements were previously accomplished through donations or grants. Commissioners responded that they view lighting as a fixture that could fall within the commission’s purview in historic districts and encouraged the civic group to provide documentation and a proposed opinion for commission consideration.
Staff and commissioners agreed the matter is complex and that any change would be gradual and coordinated with DPW and utilities; commissioners asked the civic committee to continue outreach and said the commission would be supportive of exploring an advisory opinion on lighting where the commission has jurisdiction.
