Commission staff updated the Springfield Historic Commission April 17 on preliminary work to evaluate boundaries around the Mattoon District and the Bernie Taylor block for possible consolidation into a larger local historic district.
Staff said they asked a consultant (Shannon) to review buildings in the area that wraps around Federal Square and Upper State to identify whether several small, standalone districts could be combined into a cohesive larger district. The proposal would reorganize existing small districts and potentially include additional nearby properties to create a contiguous area for local historic designation.
Commissioners discussed the concept and requested a written report from staff and the consultant for the next meeting. Staff said the report will present feasibility and candidate boundaries; no final action or public hearing was scheduled at the April 17 meeting.
