The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously on May 5 to extend its contract with Southwest Food Service Excellence for one additional year, the final one allowed under the current request‑for‑proposal terms.
Superintendent Colas told the board the original contract (Contract No. 240‑01‑2021) was awarded in spring 2021 for a five‑year term with annual renewals. The administration said it began the renewal and amendment process with the Texas Department of Agriculture in December; the department approved the extension and the board approved the renewal at the meeting.
“Administration started the renewal, amendment process in December to submit to the Texas Department of Agriculture for approval for an additional year,” Colas said during the presentation. Board materials said the district will follow the Texas Department of Agriculture’s formal bidding process next year and expects to begin that procurement in November.
Trustee Flores made the motion to extend the contract “as presented”; Trustee Perez seconded. After the board chair asked for any additional comments and received none, the motion carried unanimously.
The administration also said it watches grant and local procurement opportunities for the Child Nutrition Program; presenters noted the district participates in USDA commodity programs and a fresh fruit and vegetable program at selected campuses. No changes to pricing or contract terms were listed in the board materials presented at the meeting.
The board took no other action on the agenda item.
