Nelson County LPC backs east–west 6–12 organizational model, citing bus reductions and lost teacher planning time

The Nelson County Local Planning Committee voted to direct district planners to prepare a draft District Facility Plan (DFP) that would organize secondary schools in an east 0and 0west 6 0through 012 configuration, the committee decided during its April meeting. The motion to move forward with "option 2" passed during a roll-call vote; wording to guide consultant Stephen Ward was approved and Ward will draft the DFP for the committee's review next week.

Committee members said transportation data presented at the meeting showed clear operational benefits if the district adopts an east 0west model. "We do know that out the general fund, we're spending about $1.1 million of local revenue dollars" on transportation, the presentation said, and both staff and committee members pointed to opportunities to reduce buses and driver time by changing routes and eliminating some transfer hubs.
