Council approves first reading of waterworks ordinance that raises meter fee and bulk-water rate

The Town Council opened and closed a public hearing on Ordinance 18-66 on April 23 and adopted the ordinance on first reading to amend charges for the town waterworks system.
Clerk-Treasurer Beth Hernandez explained the ordinance makes two changes: it raises the fee charged to new residents for a water meter from $500 to $700 to cover rising meter and check-valve costs; and it establishes a bulk water rate of $10 per 1,000 gallons for contractors filling vehicles at the public works location. Hernandez said the change to the meter fee reflects increased materials and vendor prices and that there is no change to standard customer water consumption rates.
The clerk noted the bulk rate was benchmarked against nearby jurisdictions, saying the $10 per 1,000 gallons figure is “in line with the city of Crown Point and the town of Schererville as well.” After a short public hearing with no commenters, the council voted to adopt Ordinance 18-66 on first reading; the clerk recorded “Motion carries 4 to 0.”
Why it matters: The meter fee change shifts a portion of installation material cost to new homebuyers or developers; the bulk-water rate sets a new contractor charge and aligns the town with neighboring municipal rates.
What’s next: As a first-reading adoption, the ordinance will return for a second reading or for final publication as required by town code.
