Gadsden council adopts rezoning, revised permit fees and expanded Sunday alcohol hours

The Gadsden City Council on Tuesday adopted three ordinances that change land use, increase certain permit fees and expand permitted Sunday alcohol sales for package stores.
The council voted to rezone property at 140 Ewing Avenue from R-1 (single-family residence) to I-1 (light industrial) to allow the property owner to place a commercial warehouse on the site. The planning commission recommended the rezoning unanimously. The motion to adopt the ordinance carried.
The council also adopted an amendment to City Code section 110-133 to set permit fees for work that could affect city rights of way: $25 for residential applicants and $150 for up to one acre disturbed, plus $100 per additional acre. The ordinance was presented for adoption and carried on the council vote.
A third ordinance amended City Code section 6-8l to permit package stores to sell alcohol on Sundays between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Council members clarified that the change does not allow sales between 9 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday; that restriction is noted in the ordinance. That ordinance was adopted as moved and seconded.
Clerk Ivan Nelson called the votes; each motion was recorded as carried with the notation “motion carries to adopt.”
