Court authorizes interlocal agreement allowing Constable Precinct 6 to operate with neighboring agencies

The commissioners authorized County Judge Pedro P W Junior and Constable Reyes Camilla (Precinct 6) to execute an interlocal agreement enabling joint operations with the Freer Police Department, Alice Police Department, Brooks County Sheriff’s Department and Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department.
County staff said the Freer Police Department initiated the interlocal agreement and has already approved it on its side. The agreement gives the constable authority to work on operations with those partner agencies. The court discussed how forfeiture proceeds would be handled: staff said seizures and any resulting distribution would be allocated equitably based on participation, but existing older agreements among county constables and the sheriff’s office could still govern distribution for seizures that occur inside Jim Wells County unless the agreement is later amended.
Constable Reyes Camilla told the court the agreement will help the office work with state, local and federal agencies and that his office aims to fund a deputy constable position from forfeiture money should seizures occur. Commissioners asked whether the agreement would permit issuance of tickets outside city limits and discussed software/vendor issues that previously routed citations to municipal court; staff said they would follow up with the county justice software vendor to ensure correct routing of citations when applicable.
A motion to authorize the judge and Constable Reyes Camilla to sign the interlocal agreement passed by voice vote. Freer had already signed before the county executed its signature lines.
