The Jim Wells County commissioners approved a two-year lease with Louis O. Smith, trustee, and Carol Mangold, trustee, to use a caliche pit within the county. The lease term begins May 1, 2025, and ends April 30, 2027.
County staff said the agreement mirrors the contract already used by Precinct 1 for the same caliche pit and was negotiated after a recent meeting with the landowner. The lessee must use an independent contractor approved by the property owner; the county indicated it expects to begin hauling from a closer source on county land after executing the lease.
A motion to approve the lease was made, seconded and passed by voice vote. The court did not record a roll-call vote in the transcript.
