Board approves "Bridge to Geometry" pilot elective to support incoming high-school students

The Colleton County School District board unanimously approved a locally developed elective dubbed Bridge to Geometry, a pilot course intended to prepare selected eighth-grade students for success in first-year high-school mathematics.
Laura Johnson, math content specialist, told trustees the course is designed as a one-semester elective in which one high-school teacher would keep a single cohort of students for the full academic year to provide targeted instruction, small-group work and 15-minute tutoring sessions. The course will use a free state-provided curriculum supplement and be graded as a high-school elective; students will earn credit and receive grades for the course.
Johnson said the course differs from previous "spread-over-a-year" remedial offerings by focusing intensive foundational work in the fall so that students take geometry with statistics in the spring better prepared. She described teacher volunteers already identified and said selection would rely on recommendations for students scoring one to two grade levels below and showing ongoing effort; families will be contacted personally to invite participation.
Trustees asked about teacher prep loads, remediation plans for students who still fail the course, and enrollment logistics. Johnson said teachers typically have three 90-minute blocks (block schedule) and that students who do not pass could retake the course in the spring, attend summer recovery or double up in a later year.
A motion to approve the local board course for Bridge to Geometry passed unanimously.
