Commissioners authorize $1.04 million in state road-assistance funding for local paving projects

The Habersham County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to submit the 2025 Local Road Assistance (LRA) grant application to the state, seeking $1,036,446.15 to fund local road projects.
Public works director Jerry Baggett told the board the state program this year allocated funding to local governments and that the county’s allocation would cover an additional 5.83 miles of roads. Combined with miles already planned under the county’s local maintenance grant program, Baggett said the county could bid 17.94 miles for resurfacing or other road work this year. He also noted intergovernmental agreements with the cities of Clarkesville, Demorest and Tallulah Falls to combine bid quantities and potentially lower per-mile costs.
The board voted to authorize county staff to apply for the LRA funds and to allow the chair to sign related documents. The motion carried on a 4-0 voice vote.
Endnote: Baggett said the funds require no county match and will be combined with the county’s annual LMIG program to increase overall paving mileage if bids align with budget assumptions.
