San Marino Unified authorizes legal services to join PowerSchool data‑breach litigation

San Marino Unified School District on April 22 authorized a legal services agreement with France Law Group to enable the district to join a mass action lawsuit concerning an alleged PowerSchool data breach of personally identifiable information (PII).
Assistant superintendent or legal presenter Dr. Jason Ross (presented as "France Law group item") explained that France Law Group, together with F3 Law Group, is commencing litigation on behalf of school districts alleging defendants failed to protect PII by implementing sufficient security measures and credential protections.
"It is important to note that the France Law Group, and f 3 have agreed to represent all school districts who elect to join the PII mass action lawsuit on a contingent fee basis, which means that there is no cost to the school district unless there is a monetary recovery," Ross told the board.
The board voted by roll call to approve the legal services agreement; Mr. Song, Mrs. Lam, Mrs. Ryan, Mrs. Gia and Mr. Chen voted aye. District counsel and staff said the agreement permits the district to participate in the litigation without up‑front cost, subject to contingent‑fee terms and any final litigation decisions.
The action authorizes district staff to execute the agreement and proceed with enrollment in the consolidated litigation if it chooses to participate, and places no immediate fiscal obligation on the district unless and until there is a recovery.
