Avon — The Avon Town Council on April 24 read and adopted an Arbor Day proclamation declaring April 25, 2025, Avon Arbor Day and urging residents to plant and care for trees.
Julie, the council clerk, read the proclamation, which traced Arbor Day’s origin to J. Sterling Morton’s 1872 proposal to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture and noted the first Arbor Day observance planted more than a million trees in Nebraska. The proclamation lists the benefits of trees — reducing erosion, moderating temperature, lowering heating and cooling costs, improving air quality, providing wildlife habitat and supporting property values and economic vitality — and states that trees "are a source of joy and spiritual renewal."
The proclamation also notes that the Town of Avon is a Tree City USA community in Hendricks County and has held that designation since 02/2007. The council urged citizens to honor Arbor Day by planting and caring for trees to benefit current and future generations.
The proclamation was adopted as part of the council's opening ceremonial items and did not require further council action.
