Panelists and legislators debate ranked-choice voting's benefits and challenges at committee hearing

The State Government Committee held a second panel focused on ranked‑choice voting (RCV), where supporters described practical benefits for voters and candidates and critics raised concerns about ballot complexity, tabulation and trust in results.

Representative Chris Rabe introduced the panel, saying he supports civic innovation and efficiency. Jeremy Rose, Evidence and Learning Manager at FairVote Action, described voter experience and implementations: "Approximately 14,000,000 voters in 51 jurisdictions across The United States use ranked choice voting in public elections," he said, and noted that Maine and Alaska use RCV statewide and New York City used RCV in large citywide contests. Rose told members, "If a candidate receives more than half of the first choices, they win, just like in any other election. If not, then the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated... This process continues until 1 candidate wins with more than 50% of the vote."
