Indian River Shores issues proclamations for National Safe Boating Week and moonshot literacy community

Jim Vaughn and Tom McCarty of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary described local auxiliary activities — vessel safety checks, public education and partnerships with the Coast Guard base in Fort Pierce — and urged life‑jacket use. The proclamation text urges boaters to practice safe boating habits and wear life jackets while underway.
The council also presented a proclamation to the Learning Alliance and Moonshot community representatives, recognizing the Learning Alliance’s work to improve childhood literacy and noting local private‑public partnerships with the school district that the presenters said have improved third‑grade literacy rates from below 50% historically to about 65% in recent years. The council adopted the Moonshot Community proclamation for April 2025 and thanked local representatives and program partners for their work.
The town staff will provide event photos and printed materials as requested by the organizations; presenters left brochures and offered to provide training for local marine and law‑enforcement units.
