Coppell adopts 2024 International Building Code; council cites safety and potential insurance benefits

The Coppell City Council voted Tuesday to adopt the 2024 edition of the International Code Council’s family of building codes into Chapter 15 of the City of Coppell Code of Ordinances.
Steve Schubert, the city’s chief building official, presented the item and described the codes as the industry standard for updating construction practice and safety. “The codes are supposed to be the most mutually beneficial way of increasing the safety and the solidity of construction while also still trying to keep costs down to a reasonable level,” Schubert said.
Nut graf: The city’s Building and Standards Commission had recommended the adoption and the update follows the standard three-year ICC cycle. Staff said adopting the newer codes can support safer construction, better regulatory consistency and could improve the city’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) audit outcomes, with potential for lower insurance costs.
Council member Walker moved to close the public hearing and approve the ordinance adopting the 2024 ICC codes; Mayor Pro Tem Nevills seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously with recorded votes by Walker, Council member Carol, Mayor Pro Tem Nevills, Council member Prem Kumar and Council member Matthew Hill.
Schubert told the council the ICC updates every three years and said the revisions reflect new data and construction practices; he said better code enforcement and up-to-date requirements are considered in ISO audits that can affect insurance rates for residential and commercial properties.
