After‑school programs serve thousands; district highlights ACE, Champions and food pantry

Christina Torres, ACE project director, said the district’s ACE after‑school program — a federally funded, state‑administered grant program — operates at 10 campuses and serves about 1,200 students with homework help, hands‑on learning, arts, sports and family‑engagement activities. Torres noted that the district’s partnership with Community in Schools (CIS) and with Champions (KinderCare) expands districtwide after‑school options: Champions operates at eight campuses (Burnett, Garfield, Genoa, LF Smith, Moore, Southbelt, Lomax and Melillo) and serves approximately 200 students, with tiered costs and employer/employee discounting available through the vendor.
Torres also said Community in Schools highlighted LF Smith as a premier program during the year and that ACE students achieved state recognition in poster contests; staff said one student advanced to national competition.
A second district program supports food security: Torres said the district operates a food pantry at De Zavala (the transcript spelled 'DejaVala'); staff reported it serves about 300 families every two weeks and that maintenance staff assist with loading and distribution. The after‑school team said they will host family events in May and asked trustees to watch for invitations.
Trustees thanked staff and partner organizations for their work and the bridge the programs provide between school hours and family needs.
