Oceanside board declines formal policy to retire athletic jersey numbers; agrees to remove specific number from circulation

The Oceanside Union Free School District Board of Education discussed a community request to permanently retire a student-athlete's jersey number and concluded April 23 that it will not adopt a district-wide policy to retire numbers. The board agreed administrators should work with the family and athletic director to remove the specific number from circulation while the referenced students remain on teams.

Board members framed the question as a matter of precedent and equity. "We have an obligation to take a step back and look at the big picture," said Mr. Blau, a member of the Board of Education, adding the district already honors athletes through a Hall of Fame and a separate Circle of Pride. "I haven't heard of any reason to entertain a change in that or to look into entertaining a new concept such as retiring a particular number in the district... I wouldn't be in favor of any such proposal."

The debate mattered to many parents and teammates who spoke during the meeting's agenda-item public comment period. Eugene Venezio, a parent, told the board: "How about we set the precedent and do the right thing? It's for the girls lacrosse. It's one number out of a hundred." Jennifer Gemmo, whose daughter is captain of the lacrosse team and a close friend of the student being honored, said she was "appalled by the comments made here tonight" and urged the board to reconsider so the student could be recognized in the way the family sought.

Several trustees defended the district's longstanding approach. "When you retire a number, it's a permanent decision," said Mrs. Shaw, a trustee, who described alternative memorial practices the district uses, including dedicated games, patches, decals and scholarships. "Oceanside High School and Oceanside School District honors and celebrates the lives of our students. Not numbers, not objects, not things. And for that reason I don't support retiring numbers at this juncture." Mr. Kaplan, another trustee, also said retiring numbers would set a precedent the board should avoid.

Athletic director Tom Lehman told the audience administrators and coaches had already discussed a near-term accommodation. In response to questions from parents, Lehman said the district would take the specific number out of circulation until the youngest related student graduates and that the team and athletic office were coordinating with the family: "It is going to be honored." The board did not adopt a permanent policy change at the meeting.

The board emphasized it will continue to work with the family on meaningful recognition and noted multiple existing methods the district uses to remember students, such as memorial awards, scholarships and dedicated games. Several speakers from the community said they have organized fundraising, decals and dedications independently and urged the board to allow the permanent retirement the family requested.

Because trustees framed the discussion as a question of policy rather than a motion on the floor, no formal roll-call vote was taken. The board's stated outcome was to maintain its current practice (no district-wide policy to retire numbers) while directing administrators and the athletic director to keep the specific lacrosse number out of circulation for the period identified by the family.
