Board recognizes fifth‑grade math‑meet teams; district highlights cross‑school collaboration

The Newburgh City School District Board of Education opened its meeting with a recognition of fifth‑grade students who participated in the district’s elementary math meets.
Marcy Haywood, director of elementary education, and math AIS specialist Jesse Goodglass described five district‑wide math meet sessions held at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center. Goodglass said students from nine elementary schools were placed on mixed‑school teams that solved multi‑step, standards‑based word problems and saw videos showing former district graduates describing uses of math in their careers.
“During these five meets, students from each of the nine elementary buildings were placed on teams…teams worked together to work through three high level math problems that included many steps to complete,” Goodglass said. The district presented certificates to all participants and announced the first, second and third place teams (the Calculators, the M and M’s, and the Math Wizards), with top scores reported by the presenters.
Board members and staff thanked organizers and the Armory Unity Center for hosting the events.
