The CRA coordinator told the commission the Senate/House bill developments made staff more comfortable with continuing assistance but that the CRA must follow legal rules.
Commissioners asked whether a private chamber, which primarily serves its members, produces a clear public benefit that justifies $50,000 (a figure discussed previously) from city funds. Commissioner Dallas (name as spoken) asked, “Is there some benefit to our city businesses or some kind of membership, I don't know?” and asked staff to obtain a clear statement of benefits and deliverables from the chamber.
Several commissioners suggested inviting the chamber to a future meeting to present what programs, scholarships or services they would provide for local businesses in exchange for city funding. The city manager noted the chamber had offered business scholarships during recent conversations; commissioners asked for written detail and performance reporting before any appropriation.
No appropriation or vote was taken; commissioners directed staff to invite chamber representatives to give an account of proposed services, target beneficiaries and measurable outcomes.
