Board approves setback variance for Cason Family Park monument sign
Summary

The Area Board of Zoning Appeals voted unanimously to grant a variance allowing a monument sign at Cason Family Park to be placed 7 feet from the right of way instead of the required 11 feet.
APC staff had originally listed the sign height as 16 feet, but staff corrected that measurement after consulting with West Lafayette city staff, treating the upper artwork portion as public art rather than part of the sign face. Staff recommended approval of the variance for BZA 21‑88, and the board recorded seven ballots in favor, none opposed.
Jennifer Van Sciver, director of development for the City of West Lafayette, spoke for West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Incorporated, the petitioner, and invited the board to the Cason Family Park grand opening on May 22. Staff noted the park sits in a very wide right of way on Cumberland Avenue and that the reduced setback would improve visibility for park visitors.
The board incorporated the Unified Zoning Ordinance, the Comprehensive Plan, the Unified Subdivision Ordinance and the board’s bylaws into the hearing record before testimony. No opposition was recorded in the hearing.
