Planning Commission hearing postponed after meeting lacks quorum; items rescheduled for May 5

The Planning Commission canceled a scheduled public hearing after only three of its seven members attended, leaving the panel one member short of the four needed for a quorum. Commission leaders said the agendized items will be rescheduled for the next Planning Commission meeting on May 5.

The chair of the Planning Commission announced that the body did not have enough members to proceed, saying, "we do not currently have a quorum. We would need 4 members to have a quorum for our 7 person planning commission. Tonight we only have 3 present." That announcement ended the meeting's public hearing agenda.

A planning department staff member told attendees the agendized item "will be brought back on May to the next Planning Commission meeting, which is May 5," and that the item will be re-noticed as required. Later in the exchange a staff speaker clarified that an "extension" of the project "doesn't require public notice" but that the item "will be posted, on the agenda, 3 days before the hearing."

Because commissioners lacked a quorum, no motions were made and no votes were taken. Commission staff said the affected agenda items will be placed on the May 5 agenda and will be re-noticed in the local newspaper and posted on the agenda at least three days before that meeting.

The meeting record contains only brief procedural remarks about quorum and scheduling; commissioners did not debate the substance of the project during this session. The next Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for May 5, when the commission may take up the rescheduled items if a quorum is present.
