Summary
Edgewood ISD trustees recognized student achievements, teacher awards, Destination Imagination and CTE program highlights during the April 22, 2025, school board meeting.
Edgewood Independent School District trustees used their April 22 meeting to recognize student athletes, arts winners and staff who the district said exemplify its leadership and core values.
The district presented monthly "leaders of the pack" honors to senior student Athena Flores, secondary teacher Azalea Levy and Fine Arts Coordinator Daniel Lugo. The superintendent's presentation tied the recognitions to the district’s "Goals to Greatness" leadership definition, a framework administrators said connects everyday actions to larger student outcomes.
The recognitions item included presentations from multiple campus teams. The board heard that Destination Imagination teams are headed to a national competition, and district robotics teams won awards at the ERIC Robotics Invitational Challenge. Memorial High School and John F. Kennedy High School athletic teams and individual athletes were also recognized for qualifying for regionals and earning awards.
The meeting included a short spotlight on the cosmetology CTE program at Edgewood Fine Arts Academy, which the district identified as led by Stephanie Castro and Sandra Fallon; the program trains students in haircutting, styling, coloring and manicures and offers an opportunity to earn a state cosmetology operator license.
Students and staff who addressed the board described the personal and educational value of the programs. Student Athena Flores said, "I did not expect it in my wildest dreams to be ever selected for leader of the pack ... I am truly honored, excited, overjoyed to be selected." Daniel Lugo, identified as the district fine arts coordinator, described visiting classes and witnessing student engagement in the arts as central to his work.
Superintendent James Hernandez closed the presentation portion by highlighting other district events — a job fair, a budget town hall and a leadership summit — and thanked campus staff and coaches who support extracurricular and college‑and‑career programming. Board members and district staff encouraged the community to view photos and stories on the district communications web page.
The recognitions segment concluded before a short recess and the meeting’s public comment period.
The board will next meet for regularly scheduled business; details and links to awards and photographs were listed on the district’s public communications page.
