The School Board of Palm Beach County on Wednesday approved a slate of proclamations, ratified committee appointments, authorized out‑of‑country educator travel and approved a health‑center contract for district employees.
Proclamations: The board unanimously approved several proclamations declaring April observances: School Library Month; Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month; Drowning Prevention and Awareness Month; Earth Day (April 22); Gardens of Hope Awareness Day (April 28); and Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah, April 24). Each proclamation was read into the record and adopted by voice vote.
Educator travel: The board approved travel for 21 educators to participate in the March of the Educators Fellowship, a fully funded professional development trip focused on Holocaust education scheduled for June 8–19, 2025. Superintendent Burke and trustees acknowledged the fellowship’s educational value; the trip’s travel, lodging and meals are covered by the Palm Beach Center for Combating Antisemitism and partner organizations. The motion passed unanimously.
Appointments: The board ratified a membership list for board advisory committees (BRD2). That vote split 5–2 after discussion; Board Members Lane and Branch voted no. Board Member Lane had pulled the item earlier and expressed concern that one appointment could risk federal funding; after brief discussion trustees voted to ratify the list.
Contracts and health services: The board approved a contract with People1 Health Florida LLC to operate four new health centers for benefit‑eligible district employees and their dependents. The contract obligates the district to guarantee enrollment payment for up to 4,000 employees at $160 per month (district cost $7,680,000 for the first year) if the centers open; trustees and staff discussed monitoring utilization and an ability to unenroll inactive participants. The contract passed unanimously. Trustees asked administration to return with enrollment and utilization reporting and emphasized robust employee outreach in multiple languages.
Other procedural votes: Minutes and consent agenda items were approved at the meeting; the board reordered the agenda to allow student public comments related to an Earth Day proclamation to be heard earlier in the evening.
Board Chair Karen Brill and Superintendent Michael Burke invited community partners and students to follow up with staff on implementation details for health centers, educator trips and proclamations. Several votes on later policy items were conducted during the same meeting (see separate coverage); most of the contested policy votes were recorded 6–1 with Board Member Matthew Ferguson in opposition on several items.
