BYU reports consolidation, asbestos removal and summer demolition plans; county approves exemption

Brigham Young University told the Utah County Commission on April 20 that it plans to consolidate several nearby parcels into the Provo High School property, begin asbestos abatement in May and demolish an old dentist office and apartment buildings in summer 2025.
Eric B. Safe, assistant university tax manager at BYU, presented the university’s annual statement and an updated schedule. He said BYU intends to combine the dentist office and apartment serial numbers with the Provo High School parcel by no later than June 30 via a quick-claim deed and that asbestos removal on the structures is scheduled to start in May, followed by demolition and restoration in summer 2025. Safe also described consolidation and staging plans for additional Ironton properties, including fencing changes and the placement of large storage containers to support the work.
County staff indicated no outstanding issues with the application after Safe answered questions about timelines and the university’s plans. A commissioner moved to approve BYU’s 2025 annual statement for continued property tax exemption; the board voted aye and approved the item.
