Columbia Heights board approves nonrenewal of one probationary teacher contract

The Columbia Heights Public Schools Board adopted a resolution April 22 terminating and not renewing the teaching contract of a probationary teacher at the close of the 2024–25 school year, under Minnesota Statute 122A.40, subdivision 5.
The resolution lists the affected teacher(s) on an attached page; the board said the district does not have a position available for the named probationary contract for the 2025–26 school year. The board noted that the district maintains the practice of allowing affected probationary teachers to apply for open positions should any become available.
Board discussion and questions touched on the two-step nonrenewal practice the district has used for several years: an earlier resolution addressing nonrenewals required by law (for example, teachers whose licenses lapse or whose one-year contracts require nonrenewal) and a subsequent resolution that addresses positions not available for the next year after operational and enrollment reviews. The resolution was moved and seconded and passed by roll call vote. Chair Granlund called the roll; the motion carried.
