Summary
Trustees approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Batavia to install and operate public EV chargers at Batavia High School; the City will own and manage the station and bear liability, while the district will provide site access and routine upkeep duties like snow removal.
The Batavia USD 101 Board of Education approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Batavia to host a publicly accessible electric vehicle charging station at Batavia High School on April 20.
Under the agreement presented by Tony Inglesi, the City will install, own and manage the charging unit, which will be sited in the southwest corner of the high‑school parking lot. The project is supported by federal grant funding and the city agreed to remove the chargers and restore the site if the district and city agree to discontinue the service after five years.
Staff clarified operational details: the station will be public and available 24 hours a day; city ownership covers operations, maintenance and liability for damage or injuries related to the chargers. District responsibilities are limited to routine site care (for example, snow removal) and accommodating the chargers’ site footprint. Trustees asked how parking enforcement would work; administrators said non‑EV vehicles using the spaces could be ticketed or towed under local parking rules.
One board member said they would vote no on the measure (stating the vote would be their last), but the board approved the agreement in roll-call vote. Administration said the location was chosen because it aligns with the city’s electrical distribution infrastructure and grant requirements.
Outcome: Board approved the intergovernmental agreement; the city will execute grant-funded installation and operate the charger location at the high school.
