The Town of Babylon Rental Board denied a rental permit for 145 Washington Street in Deer Park and approved a slate of other renewals while setting deadlines for driveway repairs, debris removal and an eviction-related revocation, the board said at a public hearing.
The denial of the 145 Washington Street application came after the applicant, Roy Tarantola, confirmed the property was listed on Airbnb. Mark Smith, a board member, told Tarantola that “Airbnb’s is not allowed in the town of Babylon.” The board voted on a motion to deny the application (motion by Mark Smith; second by Maria Adesi); the chair announced the motion carried and the application was denied. The board told Tarantola he may reapply once he stops short‑term renting and completes required repairs, including replacing the driveway.
Board members approved permit renewals and new permits for several properties after applicants signed the town’s terms and conditions and addressed or agreed to address property issues. Approvals recorded at the hearing included applications presented by Sharaf Taneja (1 Sands Lane, Lindenhurst), Katzia Marcelin (48 State Avenue, Wyandanch), Pierre Alissa (address stated in record), Robert Doyle (1125 Seventh Street, West Babylon) and others. Several routine renewals numbered 1 through 16 were approved together by voice vote.
The board also required owners of multiple properties to correct physical defects before final permit issuance. For 402 Third Street in Lindenhurst, applicant Tanisha Fernandez was given time to replace a driveway and remove debris; the board extended action on that permit to May 21 to allow the owner to complete the work and requested photographic proof of the driveway removal. The board gave similar extensions to other owners (including the applicant identified as Satish for 261 Columbus Avenue, West Babylon) to replace driveways and clear debris; motions to extend and condition approval were made by board members and carried by voice vote.
At a second‑call item, the board discussed 1 Somerset Road North in Amityville after the town’s inspector reported an on‑site inspection found no evidence of a basement apartment and closed that complaint. Desmond D’Souza, the applicant who appeared on second call, was approved after the inspector’s update.
During the revocation calendar the board considered 210 Beachview Street in Copiague (owner Suresh Ramanathan). Ramanathan said his attorney had filed eviction papers for a tenant described as the source of recent police responses and that the tenant was expected to leave by June 30. The board voted to extend revocation review to July 1 so staff could confirm whether the eviction had occurred; the board said it would revoke the permit if the eviction was not completed and proof not provided by the July 1 review.
Procedural reminders at the start of the hearing emphasized that speakers must give name and address for the record and that the rental board relies on information applicants submit; the chair warned that approvals can be voided if submitted information later proves inaccurate.
The board scheduled follow‑up inspections for properties once owners notify the rental office and submit photographic evidence where required. The board intends to revisit the revocation case for 210 Beachview Street on July 1, 2025, unless the owner provides eviction documentation to the rental office sooner.
