Summary
The Maverick County Commissioners Court held an emergency meeting April 16 and approved a $153,000 budget amendment to cover payroll and operating supplies for Operation Lone Star while the county awaits state reimbursements.
Maverick County Commissioners Court on April 16 approved a $153,000 emergency budget amendment to cover payroll and operating-supply costs tied to Operation Lone Star while the county waits for state reimbursements.
The court held a single-item emergency meeting at 2 p.m. that the County Judge said was posted at 11:15 a.m. the same day. Officials said the amendment is needed to ensure county employees working on Operation Lone Star are paid on the next payroll cycle while a state reimbursement that had been on hold is being processed.
County officials described the $153,000 amendment as composed of approximately $115,000 to cover payroll and about $38,000 for operating supplies for the operation. County staff told the court a state reimbursement related to salaries and operations is pending; one remark in the meeting put the pending reimbursement at about $563,000 and said the hold on that reimbursement has been removed and should be reviewed and approved in about one to two weeks. Court staff also said the county had budgeted roughly three months of OLS operations in the amount discussed during the meeting.
The County Judge said purchases of equipment and other spending had reduced available cash and created an overlap that made the emergency amendment necessary before the next payroll. The judge said the amendment was being processed to ensure auditing and payroll processes continue in compliance with legal and accounting requirements and that the item will be placed again on the next regular meeting agenda for ratification.
Commissioner Vamos moved to approve the amendment; Commissioner Reis seconded. The court voted unanimously to approve the emergency budget amendment. The court then moved to adjourn and did so.
The court record shows this action was taken at an emergency meeting called to address an immediate payroll and operations need tied to Operation Lone Star; no ordinances or state statutes were cited during the discussion on the record.
