Board holds first reading of video-camera policy; district will add notice to student handbooks

The draft policy retained strikeouts and edits from an earlier review and adds language clarifying that some video — and some camera systems that include audio — "may become a part of a student's educational record under FERPA guidelines or a staff member's personnel record under Access Public Records Act guidelines," a district presenter said. The policy would also require the district to comply with state and federal record-retention laws.
Officials said they will add notice of camera and audio use to student handbooks so families are alerted. The policy is a first reading only; the board said it will review edits and vote at the next meeting.
Board members asked staff to clarify the policy's language about how recorded material may be used in disciplinary reviews. The board did not vote on the policy at the meeting.
