City of Tampa staff briefed the Historic Preservation Commission that the Richard Dave Dobie House at 1405 West Zio Street has been established as a local landmark and is featured in the department newsletter.
Dennis Fernandez, the city’s Architectural Review and Historic Preservation Manager, introduced the item and Ron Vila of historic preservation presented historical context for the property and surrounding Dobieville area in Hyde Park. "This is the Richard Dave Dobie House that is at 1405 West Zio Street," Vila said during his presentation.
Vila reviewed Sanborn maps, district boundaries and the area's early-20th-century development. He said the nomination met two local landmark criteria: planning/community-development significance and ethnic-heritage significance. The application was received in February 2024 and, Vila said, "the application went in front of the HPC, which recommended approval. It goes to the Planning Commission also for review and approval, and then ultimately approved by city council." Vila also told the commission that "no action is required" by the body at this meeting because the designation and required procedural steps were already in place.
Fernandez noted the nomination resulted in the city’s 105th local landmark, and the commission packet included the department newsletter "Tampa Bricks and Mortar," which features the Dobie House as part of the office’s continuing preservation education.
The report included background on the parcel and structures, the district expansion that incorporated Dobieville, and a short history of the neighborhood and a now-demolished elementary school associated with Richard Dobie. Staff did not propose any regulatory changes or ask the commission to vote on the matter during this hearing.
The presentation concluded with staff offering to answer questions; none were recorded on the record related to designation. This item was informational and no formal action was taken by the commission at the meeting.
