BIP students win 35 state SkillsUSA medals; Bossier program named Louisiana conservation organization of the year

Bossier’s BIP (Career & Technical) students won 35 medals at the Louisiana SkillsUSA championships; 10 gold medalists qualify for nationals. Separately, BIP and Bossier Alive were named the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s conservation organization of the year for collaborative work at the Red River Wildlife Refuge.
District officials recognized BIP (career and technical) students and staff for results at the Louisiana SkillsUSA competition and for conservation work at the Red River Wildlife Refuge. Sonya Bell, public relations liaison, presented results: BIP students won 35 medals at the state SkillsUSA championships in New Orleans — 10 gold, nine silver and 4 bronze — and several students were also elected state officers. Staff named a subset of gold medalists and said they will advance to the SkillsUSA national championships in Atlanta in June.
The board also recognized BIP’s conservation and community work. Principal Amy Washington and ag instructors were invited forward after the board heard that the Louisiana Wildlife Federation named BIP (and partners including Bossier Alive) the state’s conservation organization of the year. The nomination cited projects at the Red River Wildlife Refuge: building planter boxes and sheds, planting and maintaining native plants, and using produce in school garden-to-table demonstrations. District career students in carpentry, graphic arts and other programs were credited for building benches, sheds and a refuge-themed coloring book.
Dawn Young, an EMS instructor at BIP, was recognized as the State SkillsUSA sponsor. The board also acknowledged partners including Bossier Federal Credit Union and other local sponsors. Officials said 66 BIP students recently earned Ducks Unlimited conservation credentials; district staff characterized the combined results as a sign of strong career-technical programming and community partnerships.
