Monroe Public Works: don’t flush ‘flushable’ wipes; more rapid-flashing crosswalk beacons coming

Monroe Public Works reported at the April 22 council meeting that wastewater treatment staff are frequently removing blockages caused by products marketed as flushable and urged residents not to flush such items or pour fats, oils and grease down household drains.
Public Works staff said the items labeled “flushable” can damage pumps and other equipment at the wastewater plant. In a council exchange, staff recommended residents collect fats, oils and grease in a container and take it to an appropriate disposal site rather than putting it into household drains; staff said commercial establishments have separate containment requirements.
Public Works also reported that the city received additional grant funding to add four more rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) at pedestrian crossings and to upgrade lighting on several existing installations. The report included a map showing the 2024 installations and the locations for the current upgrades.
Councilmembers asked practical questions about disposal guidance and praised the new lighting at activated crosswalks. Staff said operations and maintenance crews installed six RRFBs in 2024 and crews are installing the additional four with lighting upgrades now.
