Virginia Beach school board’s move to suspend DEI prompts hours of student and public outcry; board keeps review underway

At a packed Virginia Beach School Board meeting on April 22, dozens of students, parents and community members called for reversal of a board action taken April 8 to suspend the division's Educational Equity policy (policy 5-4). Speakers said the suspension risks cutting programs and supports they rely on and could damage student wellbeing and academic access.

Students and parents delivered detailed testimony during more than three hours of public comment. Several students said they had personally benefited from school clubs, academies and equity-focused supports and warned that suspending DEI programs would remove safe spaces and reduce opportunities. Hattie Friedman, a sophomore in the Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School, told the board, "I urge you to reconsider this decision, to revisit, and to amend." Madeline Sheets, another First Colonial sophomore, said, "This policy is not about hiring people because of their race, gender, or identity. It's about ensuring that no one is excluded because of them." Bryce D'Atley, a freshman, said suspending DEI "diminishes the importance of representation of minorities, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and people of diverse backgrounds."
