Morton Grove recognizes Muslim Community Center and Parkview Elementary with Greener Morton Grove awards

The Economic Development Commission presented the 2025 Greener Morton Grove awards to two local organizations for campus and school sustainability efforts.
Lindsay Dahlberg, speaking for the Economic Development Commission, said the Muslim Community Center of Chicago (MCC) won the religious-organization category after the center introduced refillable water bottles for sale, installed multiple water dispensers (with paper cups), replaced Styrofoam plates and serving ware with biodegradable alternatives and shifted plastic tablecloths to cloth. The MCC also received a grant for weekly compostable-waste pickup and held educational events and signage for food-waste reduction.
The Parkview Elementary School Green Club won in the public-school category. Dahlberg told the board the group collected 34 strands of holiday lights (about 50 pounds) during the Morton Grove holiday light collection, researched switching the cafeteria to metal cutlery and reported a plan to eliminate an estimated 70,000 single-use plastic spork packets in the next school year. Parkview students and volunteers also reached 37 classrooms with recycling education and ran campaigns on Earth Day and reuse of class materials.
Mayor and trustees invited representatives to accept plaques and a plant. The board thanked both organizations for their work to reduce waste and educate campus and school communities about composting and recycling.
