Commissioners consider using Greenville High field for county recreation, reestablish advisory board

Meriwether County commissioners said at a work session April 22 that Greenville officials have offered to invest in renovating an old high-school football field for county recreation use, and the county would host games there under an intergovernmental agreement and appropriate insurance.
The proposal matters because it could provide a ready venue for countywide recreation programs while the county and cities coordinate investments and scheduling.
A county presenter said Greenville has discussed a $40,000–$60,000 budget to redo the field and facilities and that the school board would permit county use if the county carries a $1 million liability policy. “They have enough seating, concessions. They already have a building… Their fiscal year is June 30, so they're looking to pour money into recreation for the county side if we will use the field,” the presenter said.
Commissioners discussed whether the county should continue to use Flint River field or also use Greenville’s field; they emphasized keeping multiple venues so different age groups and sports can be accommodated. The board also agreed it is time to reestablish a county recreation advisory board; commissioners said an ordinance already reduced the board from nine members to five and that each district should nominate a representative.
Staff will place the field-use proposal and advisory-board appointments on the May agenda for formal consideration. No formal agreement or vote was made during the work session.
