District outlines rollout of new K–12 science standards; teacher training completed, state setting will delay science scores until August

David Delayed, director of K–12 science, told the board that North Carolina has revised its K–12 science standards to emphasize phenomenon-based learning, integrated core ideas and science-and-engineering practices that increase inquiry, problem solving and collaboration in classrooms.
Delgado (presenter name in transcript: David Delayed) said implementation work included training more than 1,400 teachers during required professional development days last year, a summer institute for late hires, multiple "spotlight on science" sessions this school year and alignment of curriculum materials. He said the district—s work prioritized embedded, job-embedded professional development and coaching for teachers to teach the revised standards with fidelity.
The state will hold standard-setting workshops this summer to set new cut scores for science EOG and EOC tests. Delayed told the board the North Carolina State Board of Education must approve recommended achievement levels in August 2025, and that official EOG/EOC science scores tied to the new standards will not be available until after that approval.
Board members had no substantive objections and thanked the science office for training and alignment efforts; staff said they will continue feedback loops with teachers and revise curriculum organizers as needed over the coming year.
