Board agrees to student—s request to fund silver-award recognition plaque at Stimson Middle School

Tatiana Marr, a junior at Walt Whitman High School, asked the South Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education to approve a Girl Scout Gold Award project to fund and install a silver-award recognition plaque at Stimson Middle School.

Marr told the board she had been inspired by an existing gold-award plaque and wanted a silver-award plaque hung at the middle school to encourage middle-school girls to pursue the Silver Award. She said she would contact her Girl Scout service unit to obtain a list of girls who had earned the Silver Award while attending Stimson and to set up a system to notify the district when future girls earned the award.

Board members responded positively. Mr. Duggan said he would reach out and was "totally on board," and Ms. Meyer asked about Marr—s own Silver Award project; Marr described creating a community garden that supplied a food pantry. The board approved the request by voice vote when the chair called for "All in favor?" and no opposition was recorded.
