Students return from Italy and Peru trips; board hears presentations from participants

Students who traveled with Walt Whitman High School staff this year described highlights from recent study trips to Italy and to Peru, telling the South Huntington Union Free School District Board of Education about cultural and curricular experiences they brought back to their classes.
At the start of the presentations, teacher Nicole Costanza introduced the Italy trip for students who were enrolled in AP art history or AP European history courses. Sixteen students visited Florence, Pisa, Verona, Venice, Assisi and Rome. Students described visits to cathedrals, art and sculpture in Florence, the Baptistry in Pisa, the Romeo and Juliet balcony in Verona, carnival in Venice, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi and a Vatican visit during a jubilee year. Students said the itinerary reinforced classroom lessons and inspired individual projects and artistic interests.
Teacher Miss Roche and chaperone Mr. Kindelman (not present) led a group of 10 students to Peru. Presenters said the trip included visits to Machu Picchu, Lima and Cusco; cultural immersion activities such as ceramics and traditional dress; a scenic train to Machu Picchu; local food and surf lessons in Lima; horseback riding and community engagement with a local guide. Students described language practice, encountering local craftmanship (alpaca wool), and opportunities to observe local customs and religious services.
Board members thanked the students and staff and noted that future trip requests will come forward for board approval, with one request mentioned for a proposed trip to Germany, Switzerland and Austria for next February break. The board framed both presentations as learning experiences that connect classroom instruction with direct cultural exposure.
Ending: The board asked that future trip requests be brought back for approval; several students and advisors were thanked for chaperoning and sharing the experiences.
