Ria, presenting the county-specific data, said the county’s total recipients for March included several thousand individuals across health care and food-assistance programs; staff reported 3,061 home-care-only recipients, 5,147 total health-care recipients, 485 FoodShare-only recipients and 2,615 total FoodShare recipients, with FoodShare benefit issuance for the month at $357,347. Child-care subsidy data for March showed 19 families and 27 children served with a subsidy issuance of $21,752.
Why it matters: These caseloads indicate steady demand for social supports in the county. Staff emphasized that the department is working through post-COVID operational transitions and that benefit review processes have largely returned to pre-pandemic norms.
Staff also briefed the committee on energy-assistance programs (LIHEAP/HEAP) and how funding streams are structured: federal LIHEAP funds and a public-benefit charge on utility bills are used for different components such as heating benefits, crisis assistance, weatherization and, recently, limited air-conditioning assistance under specific conditions. Staff reminded residents that typical shutoff activity peaks around mid-April and that the county’s last day to accept LIHEAP heating-assistance applications for the season is May 15.
The committee was told that the Salvation Army and other local partners provide additional short-term assistance (lodging, utilities) and that weather-related cancellations affected meal deliveries earlier in the month.
