Board hears capital project update: fields graded, light-pole bases installed and middle school abatement underway

District facilities staff gave the board an April capital improvement update on April 22 that reported progress on classroom and building renovations and site work for athletic facilities.
Presenters said work in the high school technology spaces includes wall painting, roofing completion, ceiling grid installation and placement of permanent light fixtures. Middle school technology work remains on the contractor punch list and abatement work — the process used to remove hazardous materials — has started in the music wing. The presenter said about 60% to 70% of the current music wing will be taken down as part of the rebuild.
On the site, contractors poured foundations for the Florence Brasser addition and continued grading and drainage work on the softball and baseball fields. Light-pole bases for the new field lighting have been set; the presenter said poles will be raised soon and described them as roughly 20-foot poles. A retaining wall was installed along Spartan Way to accommodate a new sidewalk. The presenter also said the temporary parking lot will be paved as part of the summer phase 2 contract.
Budget figures presented to the board showed the district is roughly 69% through phase 1 work and roughly 12% through phase 2 work across contractors; presenters said the district’s contingency has not changed and remains healthy. The transcript listed contractors’ allowances as about $146,000 of $570,000 (spent vs. total allowance) for items tracked as allowances.
Board members asked schedule questions; the transcript records the presenter declining to provide a firm date for raising the poles. The presenter said finishing tasks in May would include epoxy floors in technology spaces, brick façade installation on the high school addition, dust-collector completion in the technology shop, and continued abatement and selective demolition in the middle school music wing.
