Parkview Elementary starts fourth-grade student council to boost leadership and school pride

Parkview Elementary has launched a fourth-grade student council that drafted school expectations, organized a food drive and will serve as greeters during VIP events; the teacher leading the effort says roughly half of fourth graders participated and staff plan to expand involvement next year.
Todd, a Parkview Elementary staff member, told the board Parkview started a fourth-grade student council this year to build leadership skills and school ownership among upper elementary students.
Todd said the council helped create school-wide student expectations, produced posters displayed throughout the building, organized a food drive called the "Super Bowl" that collected about six or seven sizable boxes for the local food pantry, and will serve as greeters and organizers during a VIP/grandparents day. The student council also plans spring-cleaning work in the school's "Secret Garden" outdoor learning space.
Participation, Todd said, involved about half of the fourth-grade class; meetings were held during recess periods, which limited some students' participation. He said staff hope to increase adult involvement, recruit interested third graders next year to build continuity, and connect Parkview's student council with Riverview Middle School's program so students have a smoother transition to middle-school leadership.
Board members had no additional questions and thanked Todd for the report.
