Teacher Miss Cottrell said the school’s districtwide month of service used a Penny Wars fundraiser. Third grade alone raised more than $1,900, and the schoolwide total was $6,392. Students described how the game awards points for coins and allows dollar bills to subtract points, and they explained a grade‑level strategy that helped third grade win its division.
Students who spoke described Sub 0 Mission as a nonprofit founded by former Marines Al Ratus and Del Bethel that provides clothing, sleeping bags and other supplies to people experiencing homelessness, with a special focus on veterans. The students said Sub 0 Mission operates a converted bus called a “supply bus” (a vehicle refitted to carry donated items) and maintains a meeting room and distribution vehicles at its headquarters. The students listed the group’s “Stay Alive 5” items needed for winter survival: hats, coats, gloves, boots and sleeping bags.
Miss Cottrell and student speakers said Sub 0 Mission accepts donation drives annually and that its main seasonal item drive runs Oct. 1 through Dec. 15, though donations are accepted year‑round at the organization’s headquarters.
Board members praised the students’ presentation and the school’s community outreach.
