Bedford County solid-waste staff say recycling boxes, compactor arriving; annual diversion exceeds state target

County solid-waste staff told the Financial Management Committee that bright-blue recycling collection boxes funded by a recent grant have been delivered to each center and that a compactor and receiver box will be installed this week, pending state inspection.
The update, delivered during the committee's monthly business reports, said the centers cannot be used until the state finishes its inspection of the new equipment. "You can't miss them. They are bright blue," the staff member said, adding that the compactor and receiver box are scheduled for delivery and installation this Thursday.
The staff member also said the county has submitted its information for the annual progress report and that included tonnage from national companies located in Shelbyville (Walmart, Lowe's, Kroger, Dollar General, TSC, McDonald's) will be included by the state. "Our tonnage so far should put us past the 25 percent reduction needed to satisfy the state on diverted tonnage from the landfills," the staff member said.
Officials said state quarterly money for tire recycling should be deposited in April; the county receives a portion of the fee charged on sales of new tires that helps offset recycling costs. For March the committee packet lists recycling revenue of $9,301.26 and 76.41 tons collected. The speaker summarized quarterly recycling revenue (Jan'Mar) as $26,651.65 and estimated savings from diverted landfill disposal of $6,158.06.
Committee members asked whether paper/newspaper recycling at the Normandy and Trace/Bell Buckle sites is restarted; the staff member replied the boxes are on-site but cannot be used until inspected and that inspectors are trying to coordinate inspection of the compactor and the boxes together so the county may need to wait about 15 days.
The staff member said attendant buildings at the centers are nearly 30 years old and in "dire need" of repair or replacement; representatives attended a South Central Development District meeting to learn about future grants for new buildings. The staff member also said center attendants will have required state training next month.
No formal committee action was taken specifically on the solid-waste report; the item was presented as part of monthly business.
