Edinburg CISD outlines progress on gyms, lighting, bleachers and gates; bleacher installation slated this summer

Robert Gomez, facilities project manager, told trustees the district completed work on a 12-gym elementary construction program and that occupants had moved into the final gym. He said eight of the 12 gyms are fully complete while four remain under final punch-list work. Gomez said the gym project took roughly three years from board approval to occupancy. The exact aggregate savings figure discussed in the meeting materials was not clear from the public transcript and is recorded by staff in the project files.
Gomez also reported the canopy lighting project at Edinburg North High School is finished. Staff said the district bought heavier-duty, impact‑resistant fixtures and saved about $18,094 against a roughly $50,000 line item by purchasing fixtures through the maintenance department and contracting installation separately.
Trustees were told that custom bleachers for Edinburg North have been purchased and that fabrication will dictate timing. The contractor is scheduled to begin demolition of the existing bleachers in July; new bleacher delivery was expected in late July with installation wrapping in August, subject to fabrication lead times.
Julie Perez, director of maintenance operations, briefed trustees on vehicle/gate work: motors and mounting hardware are installed and the RFID readers and cards were due to be programmed the following day. Board members discussed a policy proposal to require a replacement fee for lost access cards; one trustee suggested a $25.50 replacement fee for the second issuance to encourage accountability, and Perez said staff would draft a policy recommendation.
On Canterbury Elementary, maintenance staff said they had capped vulnerable drains and are coordinating a more permanent solution with the City of Edinburg; that longer-term plan will be presented to the board after a city-district meeting. Trustees asked staff to ensure coaches and activity coordinators know scheduling implications while construction and installations continue.
Board members thanked facilities and maintenance crews for their response to recent emergencies and for progress on projects. Trustees asked that staff present timelines and punch-list closeout details at the next facilities committee meeting.
No change orders or final contractor disputes were announced in the public presentation; staff said references and past performance checks are part of evaluation for forthcoming contracts.
