Rangeley commissioners discuss dock replacement, beach erosion, gazebo concept and spring maintenance

Rangeley — At its April 17 meeting the Rangeley Park Commission reviewed several park infrastructure and maintenance items, including plans for a new dock, ongoing beach erosion and sand limitations, a potential natural-wood pavilion, library-loop signage and spring cleanup work. Commissioners discussed options and next steps but took no formal votes on these items.

Commissioners said they are trying to schedule delivery and installation of a new dock prior to July 1 to take advantage of funding availability and to avoid prospective tariff-driven cost increases. The meeting referenced an owner from EZDox as the vendor contact; commissioners said they would attempt to get on the vendor’s schedule and noted the final budget decision is expected in June when the selector and budget committee finish work.

On beach erosion, commissioners described the lake beach dropping in grade, exposing glass and rock, and creating a safety and health concern. Commissioners said state regulators have limited options: "The state won't let us" bring in sand, a remark from the meeting that the commission said it will follow up on by contacting state shoreline staff. Commissioners said they will reach out to a town contact, Brad, and other state officials to clarify what shoreline work is allowed and what permits or approvals might be required.

The group reviewed photographs and design examples for a possible natural-wood pavilion or amphitheater-like structure. Commissioners discussed scaled-down options and suggested locating a shell or stage near the tennis court area where the slope might support such a feature. No procurement decisions were made.

Other maintenance matters included a library-loop signage project (paint and ground work), spring park cleanups and equipment notes. Commissioners reported portable pickleball nets had been procured for park use; the transcript indicated "We have 4" portable nets though cost details were not specified. Play areas, swings and tennis courts were described as in use and generally in good condition.

Commissioners asked staff to develop cost estimates and to contact appropriate state and town staff about beach remediation options for consideration in future budgets. No formal motions or budget commitments were recorded for these infrastructure items.
