Selectmen approve High Peaks Paddlefest permit pending safety conditions, OK Strawberry Fest and vendor license

The Rangeley Board of Selectmen on April 22 approved public-event permits for two seasonal gatherings and granted a vendor license for the farmer's market.
The board voted to approve the High Peaks Paddlefest permit pending several requirements raised in pre-event meetings with first responders and organizers. Town staff told the board the permit will be released only if the organizers provide the required state watercraft event permits, a list of registered safety volunteers, written safety and medical plans, and written authority for on-scene incident command to declare the event unsafe if necessary. The motion to approve the event permit subject to those conditions carried on a board voice vote.
The board also approved a permit for the Strawberry Festival organized by the American Legion and Sportsman's Association and granted a vendor license to Scott McDonald to vend at the farmers market. Motions to approve the Strawberry Festival and the vendor license carried unanimously.
Town staff said that if any required permit condition for Paddlefest is not met, the permit will not be released. Staff also noted that absentee voters who will not be present at the polling site would not automatically receive conditional materials unless arranged; the clerk's office will explore practical ways to reach absentee voters if legally allowed.
Selectmen emphasized that the Paddlefest organizers had agreed to the safety items discussed at the pre-meeting, and the permit was approved on that contingency.
