City says it has secured vacant 'living' building and is fielding redevelopment interest

The Blue Island City Administrator told the council the city has secured control of a long-vacant commercial building and taken immediate steps to stop illegal dumping and unauthorized access.
The administrator said crews exchanged locks, placed concrete barriers at the front of the property and began site cleanup. “We sent some crews in there to begin the process,” the administrator said. The city’s public-works crews also installed physical barriers to reduce illegal towing and dumping.
Council staff said the city does not plan to spend significant city dollars on full remediation now; instead, officials expect cleanup and redevelopment activities to be part of any future developer’s work. The administrator said the site’s transportation access makes it attractive to potential industrial users and that the city has already received interest from prospective developers.
The administrator said the city has received multiple inquiries and one company contacted staff immediately after a local news item ran, asking the city not to accept any sale until the company could visit the site. Officials emphasized they will continue to manage the property and coordinate with potential buyers or developers.
No sale or redevelopment agreement was approved at the meeting, and the administrator did not name potential buyers or provide timelines. Council members praised public-works staff for securing the site.
